30 Nov How to Make Hemp Clothes for your Dog
One hemp product you may not be able to find for your dog is hemp clothes. If you have a sewing machine or know a seamstress, you may be able to make your own. The process is rather simple. This guide will help you learn how to make hemp clothes for your dog.
Obtaining Hemp Fabric
Hemp fabric may be available in hemp-legal markets. If it is not available in your local area, it can be purchased online. Order a couple of extra yards in case a mistake is made.
To determine how much fabric you need, measure your dog from shoulders to rump and write it down. Then measure your dog’s width at the shoulders, mid-back and rump. You’ll then need to measure the width of your dog’s chest. The final two measurements are the circumference of your pet –one will be around the shoulder area and the other around the belly.
There may be different types of hemp fabric available. For pets, something that is mixed with cotton may be a good idea since this tends to be a softer material.
Create your Pattern
Use a piece of large tracing paper (or several pieces taped together if need be) and start making your marks. Use a ruler for this process as you’ll need to be precise. For the rounded areas, you’ll need a compass for accuracy.
Start by marking your top and bottom. Mark your sides next.
If you are attempting to make the clothing out of 1 piece of fabric, you’ll also need to mark where to stop the bottom portion – which is a little closer to the ribs for male dogs.
Make straight lines using the ruler to make your shape. Mark the sections for the legs. Use the compass to make perfect circles for the leg cut-outs. Use the compass for all rounded areas of the design.
Make sure the pattern is about 1 ½ inches bigger than you’ll actually need since you will need to leave room for seams.
Cut out the pattern
Get your dog nice and calm – drape the pattern over your furbaby to see if you’ve made the pattern the right size.
Putting the Fabric to Work
When you are ready to make the clothes – use fabric tape to secure the pattern to the fabric. Using sharp scissors, cut directly along the edge of the pattern. A utility knife may work better for cutting out the leg holes.
When you have cut out the entire piece, remove the pattern and any excess adhesive that may be lingering from the tape.
Finish your seams either by hand or with a sewing machine. Add embellishments to the exterior or dye the fabric.
Wash the garment before trying it on your pet.
Hemp clothing can be expensive. It is not mass-produced for pets yet. Hemp is an ideal fabric for pet clothes because it is durable and holds up well in the elements – even in the rain. If you have a pet that wears a lot of clothes, it may be worth it to make your four-legged family member a few pieces for their wardrobe.
