13 Feb Where Does CBD for Pets Come From?
CBD companies are often asked where CBD comes from. In this quick guide, we’ll address that question. Contrary to popular belief, CBD is CBD regardless of which member of the cannabis family it’s extracted from.
CBD for pets is most often extracted from hemp plants. The concentration of CBD in hemp plants is much higher than in cannabis plants. In some strains of hemp, the CBD concentration has been known to test in the mid-20% range. In cannabis, unless it’s been modified, the concentrations of CBD are very low.
Some strains of cannabis have been specifically crossbred to have more CBD than THC, but there is still too much THC in these strains for pets. Pets do not tolerate THC in high doses.
CBD products, even for pets, can contain very small amounts of THC – which doesn’t seem to harm the pets at all.
CBD can also be synthetically made. Synthetic CBD products are not suggested for pets. These are made from chemicals which may not be safe for pets – no information is available regarding the safety of synthetic CBD for pets.
Where Pet Health CBD Gets It’s CBD for Pets From
At Pet Health CBD our CBD oil is sourced only from American hemp farmers with organic growing practices. It is important to us that the CBD oil we source is of the best quality, is clean and is not grown with harmful chemicals. Fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and other chemicals can leave residual remnants behind. We opt to use CBD oil that is organically grown.
CBD from Cannabis
As we mentioned a couple of sections up, CBD can be sourced from cannabis plants too. There are a handful of cannabis strains that contain more CBD than THC, but the THC content is still more than what a pet can handle. It would take far more cannabis to produce the same amount of CBD oil as it does from extracting it from hemp. If CBD itself was extracted from a cannabis plant, the cost of that CBD would be much more because the concentrations are that small. Some strains of cannabis don’t even have 1% CBD.
Is the CBD from the United States or Somewhere Else?
Hemp is grown around the world. Climates and soil types vary. It is important to grow hemp in clean soil. Hemp plants are like sponges – the roots will absorb chemicals and compounds that are in the soil. It is important to know where the hemp is grown and what cultivation practices are used. U.S. grown and extracted CBD oil is preferred – there is much better traceability with U.S. hemp-derived CBD products than those produced elsewhere in the world.
Hemp and cannabis are often confused. Yes, they belong to the same plant family but are different. Hemp produces more CBD, cannabis produces more THC. When it comes to CBD for pets, the CBD comes from hemp plants. Always review lab test results before purchasing any CBD products for pets to ensure that it is clean and has passed all components of microbial, heavy metal, chemical and contaminant testing.
