05 Mar Will Pet CBD Products be Regulated by the FDA?
In the future, it is expected that regulations for pet CBD products will be created. There isn’t enough information, according to federal agencies, to make clear regulations yet. Although pet parents around the world continue to report that their pets have responded well to CBD, anecdotal claims aren’t enough for the FDA to move forward with creating structured regulations.
No Medical Claims
One thing that has been made very clear by the FDA is that no CBD company can market products claiming that they cure, treat or resolve any medical issue. This applies to pet CBD and human CBD products. Only GW Pharmaceuticals can market their medication, Epidiolex, as treating seizures as multi-phase clinical trials took place to receive FDA approval for mass production and distribution via prescription.
The FDA is trying to Learn More about CBD for Pets
The FDA is continuing to work on obtaining necessary data regarding how CBD interacts with a pet’s body as well as the safety of CBD for pets. Pets do have an endocannabinoid system just as humans and all mammals have. This means that their bodies are also designed to accept cannabinoids.
The FDA has not approved any CBD products for pets specifically. The main suggestion is to speak with your pet’s veterinarian prior to starting them on any CBD product. We have always suggested speaking with your vet first. Not all vets are educated on CBD for pets or are willing to have a discussion surrounding CBD use for pets, but it’s always worth a try.
California adopted the Compassionate Care Law for Pets. The full text of this law can be read on the California Legislative Information website. Vets are not permitted to prescribe any type of cannabis or hemp product for pets. They are permitted to have a discussion regarding medical cannabis or CBD use for pets and can help with creating a proper treatment plan.
What this law doesn’t allow:
- Vets to have a financial stake in any cannabis or CBD company
- Cannot receive any compensation from cannabis or hemp companies
- Cannot sell any cannabis or hemp products in the office
- Cannot administer CBD or cannabis products to pets
The law goes even further to prevent the immediate family of a veterinarian from receiving remuneration from the involvement with any cannabis or CBD company. This law only pertains to vets practicing in California.
So far, no other states have enacted any laws regarding pets and cannabis or CBD products.
Plans for the Future of Pet CBD Product Regulation
It is likely that the FDA will create regulatory structure for human CBD products before they get to pet CBD products. While this sector of the industry does need standard guidelines of operation and safety, some companies, like Pet Health CBD, are already making sure that products are clean, pet-safe and contain ingredients that are safe for pets to use.
It could be a couple of years before the FDA has standard guidelines and regulatory framework in place for pet CBD products. Until then, consumers are urged to speak with their vets and research pet CBD manufacturers well. At Pet Health CBD we have always provided clean, safe pet CBD products and will continue to work hard to do so.
